Everyone has heard a home trick for testing gold. Some are useless and a few can damage your jewellery.
Can I test gold at home?
Only roughly. Home tests can hint at a problem but cannot confirm purity. A proper check needs the right equipment.
Does the magnet test work on gold?
Gold is not magnetic, but many imitation metals are not either, so a magnet cannot prove a piece is real. If a piece sticks strongly, it is probably not solid gold.

What about scratching or biting gold?
Please do not. Scratching can damage a piece, and biting is not a reliable test.
How do jewellers actually test gold?
With experience first, then equipment. At Qasmia Jewellers we use an XRF machine, and an acid or heat check if we are unsure.
