Most of us buy gold a few times in our lives, usually for weddings, gifts or savings, and nobody explains purity properly. Here is the short, honest version.
What does 21KT mean?
It means 21 parts gold out of 24, or about 87.5% pure. The rest is other metal added for strength, which is why 21KT is a favourite for everyday wear in many Pakistani homes.

What should be written on a gold receipt?
At the very least the KT and the weight. Our receipts state the KT and weight, and we explain the wastage percentage and making charges whenever a customer asks.
"I was looking for 21k gold jewellery in Karachi and visited Qasmia. Good experience overall, quality was good and they explained everything properly."

How do jewellers check gold purity?
Experienced eyes can recognise gold quality, but that is only the first step. When we buy gold from a customer we use an XRF machine, a non-destructive scanner that reads the metal, and if we are unsure we also use an acid or heat check.
Do magnet tests or home tests work?
No. Gold is not magnetic, but neither are many imitations, so a magnet tells you nothing. Scratching a piece at home can also damage it.
What should I ask any jeweller before paying?
Ask how the purity was checked, what the wastage percentage is, what the making charges are, and whether the KT and weight will be on the receipt. A good jeweller answers calmly. Vague answers are worth noticing.
